Blaugust 21 - Linux II

2025 August 21 // 2025, webdev, linux, blaugust

feeling: awake!

reading: n/a

playing: n/a

drinking: mint tea

As I said in my last blogk, I'm following peter wartmans posts about it. It's pretty bare, but luckily there is another in-depth document that was posted in the qrts. I hate even though we're all on the same 3 sites, it's IMPOSSIBLE to find any information o)-(

If you don't know what Wine is, it's a program that lets you run Windows applications on a Mac or Linux device. If you've used a Steamdeck to play 2000s vns, you've used wine. It's open source and updates rather regularly.

I had backed up my csp following their documentation.

  • Download clip studio paint, put it in a place you can easily find it.
  • Open wine. It will update itself.
  • Add application.
  • As in the tutorial, we will use Windows Version 8.1 Click apply.
  • Go to the libraries tab, and in new override for library scroll down until you see concrt140. Click add.

- To run CSP you might need to set the windows version to 8.1 and use the concrt140 library override. You can do this using the winecfg command in the "Applications" and "Libraries" tabs (there are console commands for this too).

Installing CSP

I'm attempting to install V4 of CSP.

  • Open the terminal and enter:

wine path/location/name_of_installer.exe

  • And hit enter. Please replace the location to wherever it is you put the exe, and replace the name with whatever csp called the installer. It should work!

It downloaded!! Next step... see if it runs.

IT DOES. It takes a minute to open, and I made a few mistakes here. I forgot to set the concrt140 library command (didn't hit apply...!!)

To get pen pressure working, go into preferences > tablet > click use mouse mode in tablet driver settings

YIPPEE!! It opens, and is pretty much fully functional AND all my brushes, shortcuts and such were kept ^w^

I'm still having lag issues, and I think it might be wine....? Hmmm.... But I'm having them in Krita too so I think it's my tablet setup. I am using opentabletdriver, but maybe I can go back and try something else?

I'm counting today as a big old win in my books. I'm busy until Saturday evening, so hopefully I can have som energy then to sort it out. I really want this to work!

Other Software Alternatives

Open source has come a long way. Some things are still clunky/missing features, but they're MUCH better then they were 10 or so years ago when I first got into them.

  • Krita has a lot of community plugins, supports animation, the last time I used it was in college, and I loved it back then. Everyone I know who uses it today loves it.
  • Blender extremely popular 3D alternative. Huge community, big learning curve but time's all we have.
  • Inkscape
  • Scribus publishing/pdf program. STILL VERY CLUNKY, but

These all require time to learn and get familiar with. The downside to a lot of open source programs is friction between programs. If you're used to Adobe, you're going to take a bit of time to adjust, since these are all different file types, and their can be headaches to get them all to play nice. The one thing I'll say about the Adobe suite, they make it easy.

listening to...

I'm so antsy, I wanna get back into gamedev ASAP but linux took priority... Dying to get stuck in planning and writing (I basically... hated... what work I'd done on trophies so far.... I was not in the headspace to create.... honestly I should've just put it on the backburner instead of forcing myself. When has that ever worked out?)

I'm also all over the shop today bc I have a doctor's app.... I can do this... I will buy myself a silly drink as a reward... But I think for now I'll start gamedeving a little bit!!
