Quick n' dirty web guide

2025 July 24 // 2025, guide, webdev

So you wanna make a website? Worried about what you'll put on it? Don't be! I'm here to help.

Make a website now make a website now make a website now!!!! Don't wait! It doesn't have to be perfect!!

Editors

for the love of god use vscode don't keep all your files only on neocities. There's LOTS of other editors, but vscode has the support and ease-of-access.

domains

I was using namecheap, but they are run from Arazona, USA. I have moved to hostslim. but this is more advanced stuff.

Neocities allows nsfw (no underage aka lolisho), Nekoweb is run from Germany so no nsfw whatsoever. These are both free options that allow you to just get set up. They're not important in the long run.

templates

nomnomnami has a bunch of beautiful, functional and easy to use templates. From a microblog style to a newspaper!

blogs

Currently, I use tabvoids. I've used zonelots and zonelets in the past. all have pros and cons and different levels of effort.

29.7.25 I've seen more and more people use strawberry starter, which is a simple blog template 11ty.

galleries

I use kaylee rowena's gallery template in my own gallery. it's easy, it's simple, it does the job. There are PLENTLY of others, but this is the easiest template to start understanding html/css. It's also mobile-friendly.

comics

rarebit is great if you're looking for the classic webcomic experience. it's very popular.

fic

kindra has a fic masterlist template (with tags) and an ao3 css skin, so you have full control when you download your fics via html to post on your site.
